Port to Port
Sailing Schedule
How long does it take ship a car to or from Hawaii? Well, the shipment process transit times can vary depending on the origin of pick up or delivery in the mainland. However, ocean transit to Honolulu, Hawaii from any mainland port will remain anywhere from 7-10 days. As an example, if you are shipping your vehicle to Hawaii from the east coast of the United States the complete process usually takes 20-25 days. In some cases, unforeseen delays may occur due to factors such as weather. By reserving ahead of time we will help you plan taking in consideration all seasonal factors.
What We Offer
Preparing Your Vehicle for Shipment to the Delivery Location
Before shipping your car to or from Hawaii, ensure it is thoroughly inspected and complies with regulations regarding personal items and gas tank levels.
The Importance of Thorough Inspection
Conducting a thorough inspection prevents complications. Document the car’s condition with photos and notes, covering dents, scratches, and any existing damage. Use this documentation for comparison upon delivery.
Ensure critical systems like the emergency brake and lights are functional. For inoperable vehicles, notify the shipping company as different procedures might apply. Check fluid levels (oil, transmission, etc.) and ensure there are no leaks, which could incur additional charges or denial of shipment.
Remove any personal items, including infant car seats, to avoid misplacement or damage. Ensure you have the title or ownership document ready for verification. Also, record the license plate number for identification.
Regulations on Personal Items and Gas Tank Levels
Shipping companies have strict rules on personal items within the vehicle. We do not allow any personal belongings because they are not insured during transit. If the car has to leave the mainland with personal items, verify with the carrier and note any specific restrictions.
The gas tank should be filled to a quarter or one-eighth capacity to reduce weight and risks associated with fuel transport. This also reduces the shipper’s liability in fuel-related issues. Make sure the tank is not completely empty, as the car will need enough fuel for minor repositioning.
Adhering to these guidelines ensures a smoother shipment process and vehicle safety.

The Shipping Process
Shipping a car to or from Hawaii involves several distinct steps, from determining the right method of transport to managing logistics between mainland ports and delivery locations.
Port to Port Service
The journey begins at mainland ports, where the car is prepared for shipping. Key ports often used include Long Beach, Oakland, and Seattle. The vehicle is then loaded onto a specialized vessel designed for car shipments.
Our Hawaii car transport company handles everything from securing the vehicle to managing the entire process of transit. Transit times vary, but it typically takes about 7-14 days. Customers can expect to receive tracking updates to monitor the progress of the car shipped to the Hawaiian shores.
Upon arrival, the car is unloaded at Hawaiian ports such as Honolulu or Hilo. Importantly, documentation must be in order, which includes proof of ownership and car registration. Customs can delay the shipping process if paperwork is incomplete.
Choosing Between Port to Port and Door to Door Services
There are two primary service options: Port to Port and Door to Door. A Port to Port service (also referred to as terminal to terminal) requires the vehicle to be dropped off at, and picked up from, the port. This method is often cheaper and involves less coordination with the Hawaiian and mainland port.
Door to Door services offer greater convenience. Our Hawaii car transport company can arrange for your car to be picked up from your home and delivered directly to the final destination in Hawaii. This option is more expensive but can save significant time and effort.
While both options ensure safe transport, the choice between them depends on the owner’s budget and convenience needs. Careful consideration of these factors can make the entire process smoother and faster.
How It Works
Logistics and Regions of Hawaii Shipments
Car shipping to Hawaii involves complex logistics and routes, with different considerations for the East Coast, West Coast, and the Big Island.
Need reliable car shipping
to Hawaii or Puerto Rico?
East Coast to Hawaii Routes
Shipping cars from the East Coast to Hawaii requires careful coordination between multiple mainland ports. These routes are typically longer and may involve transshipment points. Ports like New York, Baltimore, and Miami serve as starting points.
Car owners must prepare for longer transit times, averaging three to four weeks. Due to the distance, costs are generally higher. Port service efficiency at these locations is crucial to ensuring smooth transfers.
Proper documentation and careful scheduling are vital. The logistics involve sea and sometimes rail transport, making tracking more complex but essential for timely arrivals.
West Coast to Hawaii Logistics
The West Coast offers more direct routes to and from Hawaii, primarily through ports in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. These ports offer frequent sailings, which can shorten transit times to around one to two weeks.
Port service at these locations is generally more streamlined due to higher volumes of shipments specifically destined for Hawaii. Car owners often find it easier and more cost-effective to ship from the West Coast.
Preparation includes ensuring vehicles are clean, free of personal items, and meet the necessary Hawaii Shipping standards.
Shipping to and from the Big Island
The Big Island requires specialized logistics as its ports, like Hilo and Kailua-Kona, have different capacities and schedules than Honolulu. Shipments to and from the Big Island might take longer due to the fewer available sailings and the need to transfer cargo from larger ships.
Car owners must be aware of potential delays and plan accordingly. Services such as door-to-door delivery might be limited, requiring additional coordination with port services.
Understanding the specific needs and regulations for the Big Island is crucial to ensure a smooth shipping process.
Cost-Saving Tips for Hawaii Car Transportation
Plan Ahead
Booking your auto shipping service well in advance can help you snag better deals. Carriers often offer discounts for early reservations.
Choose Terminal-to-Terminal Shipping
Opting for terminal–to–terminal shipping can be more economical than door–to–door service. You drop off and pick up your vehicle at designated terminals.
Flexible Shipping Dates
Being flexible with your shipping dates may lead to lower rates. Peak times see higher costs due to increased demand.
Seasonal Considerations
Some seasons have lower rates due to decreased demand. Shipping a car during off–peak periods can result in cost savings.
Type of Service
Enclosed shipping is more expensive than open shipping. Choose open shipping unless your car requires special protection.
Remove Personal Items
Shipping companies charge based on weight and space. To save money, ensure your car is empty to avoid additional costs.
Understand Taxes and Fees
Ask about any potential fees that may not be included. Understanding the full cost of taxes and customs fees upfront prevents unexpected charges.
Beyond Hawaii car shipping, we also offer military car shipping, international auto shipping, and more. If you have additional questions or are ready to schedule your car shipment to or from Hawaii, reach out to our team. We’re here to make the entire process easy for you!

Many thanks to Gerson! I have used him twice in the past 6 months shipping vehicles from Indiana to the island of Kauai. He made the process very smooth, and anytime we have needed him, he is there immediately, nights and weekends even. If you are looking for the best prices in auto shipment and someone doing the job right, call Gerson! His customer service is spot on. Mahalo again Gerson!

Gerson was really helpful and offered the best price for shipping a car from Long Beach, CA to Honolulu, HI. Kept us informed throughout the process. I usually don’t give reviews but felt it necessary to offset the loco who gave 1 star review and wrote the manifesto below about her uncle.
